A key stretch of McGinnis Ferry Road will shut down around the clock for seven days starting Monday, July 20, blocking direct access to Emory Johns Creek Hospital, the Medley mixed-use development site, and neighborhoods along the corridor.
Forsyth County announced Friday, July 17, that crews will fully close McGinnis Ferry Road between the Brookwood Road/Jones Bridge Road intersection and Sargent Road through Sunday, July 26, to install a 72-inch storm drainage line. The work is part of the county's McGinnis Ferry Road widening project, which is expanding the road from two to four lanes between Douglas Road and Hospital Parkway.
Who's affected
Local traffic can still reach McGinnis Ferry Road as far as the Seven Oaks Boulevard and Brassfield Drive intersection. Beyond that point toward Sargent Road, the road is completely blocked.
Deer Lake subdivision residents will lose access to their Fawn Lake Drive entrance on McGinnis Ferry Road during the closure. Forsyth County said those residents should use the neighborhood's alternate entrance from Peachtree Parkway.
The Medley development site, located along McGinnis Ferry Road and Johns Creek Parkway near the closure zone, may also see disrupted access during the week.
Detour routes
Forsyth County has posted two signed detours:
Route A (through traffic): Take Brookwood Road, turn right onto Peachtree Parkway, then turn right onto McGinnis Ferry Road at Sargent Road.
Route B (Emory Johns Creek Hospital): Follow Jones Bridge Road, turn left onto Sargent Road, then continue to McGinnis Ferry Road.
Advance warning signs, detour signs, hospital route signs, and "Local Traffic Only" signage will be in place throughout the week. Emergency responders have been notified of the closure and the designated detour routes.
The wider project
The closure is one piece of a multi-year, two-phase effort to widen McGinnis Ferry Road from Ronald Reagan Boulevard, east of the new SR 400 interchange, to Hospital Parkway. The project is a partnership among Forsyth County, the City of Johns Creek, and the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The new SR 400 Exit 11A interchange at McGinnis Ferry Road opened the week of July 13, just days before this closure was announced.
Phase 1 construction, covering the eastern portion from Douglas Road to Hospital Parkway, is expected to wrap up in spring 2028, according to Forsyth County and the City of Johns Creek. The finished project will also include sidewalks and trails connecting residents to the Big Creek Greenway and a replacement of the Caney Creek bridge with a box culvert.
