A Georgia House committee studying teacher pay and school metrics visited Autrey Mill Middle School in Johns Creek on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Fulton County Schools Superintendent Mike Looney and Kim Richards, a district staff member, presented an overview of the district's work to the Georgia House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Education Performance Metrics and Workforce Stability, according to the district. Board of Education members also attended.
The committee, chaired by State Rep. Bethany Ballard (R-Warner Robins), is examining two issues under House Resolution 1582: how Georgia measures school performance through the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) and how to keep experienced teachers in classrooms. Fulton County Schools is the fourth-largest district in the state, with enrollment above 83,000 students and a 99% teacher fill rate for the 2026–27 school year, according to North Fulton Today.
The Johns Creek stop was the committee's fourth meeting. Earlier sessions examined how schools are assessed and what metrics are used. At the third meeting Sept. 9 at Columbus State University, the focus shifted to veteran teacher compensation.
"We have started the conversation about our veteran teachers, what it takes to keep them in the classroom, and make sure that they are there to mentor our younger teachers," Ballard said at the Sept. 9 Columbus session, as reported by WRBL.
State Rep. Carmen Rice (R-District 139) said at the same meeting that the committee discussed a pay gap affecting teachers with more than 21 years of service, who do not receive step increases between 21 and 30 years.
The CCRPI accountability system is familiar ground for Fulton County Schools leadership. In February, Looney led board members through a daylong session unpacking how the scores are calculated.
The district did not detail what specific data or programs Looney and Richards presented to the committee on Sept. 30.
Once the committee completes its meetings, it will send a report to Georgia House Speaker Jon Barnes. No timeline for the report or additional meeting dates has been announced.
Autrey Mill Middle School is also part of an active North Fulton attendance boundary review authorized by the Board of Education on Sept. 17. The first community forum for affected middle schools is scheduled for Oct. 7, 6 to 8 p.m., at Centennial High School's gym in Roswell.
