The Johns Creek Lady Gladiators tied the program's all-time wins record Thursday, Sept. 10, beating the Riverwood Raiders 7-5 behind a nine-strikeout complete game from pitcher Uma Pittman.
The win moved Johns Creek to 15-3 overall and 3-1 in region play. The Lady Gladiators can break the record outright when they travel to Lanier on Tuesday, Sept. 15, for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
Pittman walked just two batters in the circle against Riverwood. She matched that effort at the plate with two hits and three RBIs.
The Johns Creek athletics department credited the team's resilience after Riverwood mounted a late comeback against a five-run Johns Creek lead.
Senior Zelda Arthur reached base in all three plate appearances, collecting two hits and stealing two bases. She entered the game as one of the team's leaders in batting average, on-base percentage, runs scored and stolen bases, according to the school's season preview.
The bottom of the order came through with timely hitting. Allie Lafon ripped an RBI triple off the right-field fence. Addie Grindle added an RBI hit, and Collins Freret stole a base that helped close out the win.
The victory came one game after the Lady Gladiators' 11-game winning streak ended in a loss at Milton. Head coach Jim Ernst's squad answered with a win that put them in the record book.
Pittman has been the team's top pitcher all season for Ernst's squad. She leads the team in earned run average and has logged complete-game wins over Peachtree Ridge, Norcross and Roswell in addition to the Riverwood outing.
After the Sept. 15 trip to Lanier, Johns Creek travels to Roswell on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m. and travels to Riverwood on Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.
