Sophomore Swara Khatri threw a complete-game two-hitter and drove in two runs as the Johns Creek Lady Gladiators routed Sprayberry 15-1 on the road Wednesday, Sept. 2.
The blowout pushed Johns Creek's winning streak to 10 games. The team's athletics website listed the Gladiators at 12-2 overall after the win, but that figure appears to be a leftover from the Roswell game the night before — the team's full schedule shows the Sprayberry win actually pushed Johns Creek to 13-2 overall, while the 1-0 region mark is accurate.
Khatri struck out four Sprayberry batters and allowed just two hits across the complete game. She collected two hits and two RBIs in the 15-run attack.
The sophomore was far from alone. Isla Wells and Avery Huffman each recorded multi-hit games. Audrey Lafon, Zelda Arthur, Hayden Kennedy, Reese Stiltner and Kennedy Brewer all added hits as the lineup produced runs top to bottom.
Back-to-back wins open region play
The Sprayberry rout came one night after Johns Creek edged Roswell 3-2 at home on Tuesday, Sept. 1, in the Gladiators' first region victory of the season. Uma Pittman dominated in that one, allowing just one infield single and striking out six while collecting two hits and an RBI of her own.
Head coach Jim Ernst's squad opened the year 5-2 in mid-August, according to a Johns Creek High School feature, and has since won 10 straight. The pitching tandem of Khatri and Pittman has anchored the surge, with both sophomores delivering complete-game performances in the back-to-back region openers.
What's next
The Gladiators were scheduled to travel to Gainesville on Thursday, Sept. 3, for another region contest at 6:30 p.m. The region schedule continues at Milton on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m., followed by a home game against Riverwood on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m. Johns Creek then visits Lanier on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m.
