The Johns Creek Lady Gladiators set a new program record for single-season wins Tuesday, Sept. 15, beating Lanier 6-4 in a Region 7-AAAAAA game at Sugar Hill.
The victory gives head coach Jim Ernst's squad a 16-3 overall record, surpassing the previous program high of 15 wins. Johns Creek had tied that mark just five days earlier with a 7-5 win over Riverwood on Thursday, Sept. 10.
The record-breaking win caps a stretch in which the Lady Gladiators won 13 of their last 14 games. Their only loss during that run came Sept. 8 at Milton, 5-3, snapping a 12-game winning streak. Senior Reese Stiltner went 4-for-4 at the plate in the Milton loss.
The Gwinnett Daily Post's roundup covered Lanier's side of Tuesday's game, crediting Sophia Roche and Peyton Crouse offensively and Violet Parsons and Lily Bruce in the circle for the Longhorns; specific stat lines from that account could not be independently verified for this article.
Sophomore Uma Pittman has anchored the pitching staff all season, leading the team in earned run average. She threw a complete game in the record-tying Riverwood win, striking out nine while adding two hits and three RBIs at the plate. Senior Zelda Arthur, the team's leader in runs scored, reached base in all three plate appearances in that game.
Other contributors in the Riverwood win included Addie Grindle, who delivered a clutch RBI hit, and Allie Lafon, who ripped an RBI triple off the right-field fence. Collins Freret stole a key base that helped seal the victory.
Johns Creek, now 4-1 in Region 7-AAAAAA play, travels to Roswell on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m. The remaining region schedule includes a trip to Riverwood on Sept. 29 and home games against Lanier on Oct. 1, Gainesville on Oct. 6 and Milton on Oct. 8, plus a non-region game at Forsyth Central on Oct. 5.
