Johns Creek residents can walk through the Big Creek Water Reclamation Facility in Roswell during Clean Water Week, Oct. 19-23.
Fulton County Public Works announced three events on its social media accounts, each offering a different way to learn about or help protect local waterways. The Big Creek plant treats wastewater for more than 250,000 residents, businesses and institutions across north Fulton County, including Johns Creek.
Facility tour, Tuesday, Oct. 20, 10 a.m. Visitors will walk through the plant for a behind-the-scenes look at how wastewater is treated and how the process protects local waterways. Staff will be on hand to answer questions. Children under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Adopt-A-Stream Chemical Monitoring Workshop, Wednesday, Oct. 21. Administered through Georgia's Adopt-A-Stream program, the roughly four-hour workshop teaches volunteers to test stream water for dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH and temperature using handheld field equipment. Volunteers who collect data within 10% accuracy and score 80% or better on a written test earn certification to monitor local streams on their own.
Stream cleanup, Friday, Oct. 23. Participants 18 and older can help clear debris from a local waterway. Fulton County will provide all gear. Organizers ask volunteers to wear sturdy shoes that can get dirty.
The facility itself is a point of pride for the county. A $298.6 million expansion boosted capacity from 24 million gallons per day to 32 million gallons per day and added membrane bioreactor technology. The plant has earned eight national and state awards, according to a Fulton County press release from March.
"This is Fulton County's largest infrastructure investment to date, and it benefits all residents," Director of Public Works David Clark said in a March 10 press release announcing the facility's eighth award.
Fulton County has been expanding public access to its water facilities. The county offered Water Wednesday tours at Big Creek in July. Residents who want to schedule a tour outside of Clean Water Week can contact Sabrina Attimy at [email protected].
Registration links for each event are available through Fulton County's social media pages.
