The National Weather Service is forecasting a heat index potentially reaching 102°F in the Johns Creek area on Thursday, Aug. 13, pushing conditions to the top of what the agency classifies as its "Extreme Caution" range for heat-related illness.

The actual high temperature Thursday is expected to hit 93°F, according to the NWS point forecast issued by the Atlanta/Peachtree City office. Wednesday's forecast calls for a high near 91°F with a heat index up to 100°F.

The heat does not break after Thursday. Friday's high is forecast near 95°F, with mid-90s continuing through the weekend.

Who's most at risk

At a 102°F heat index, near the boundary of the NWS "Danger" category, heat cramps and heat exhaustion become more likely with prolonged exposure or physical activity, according to the NWS Atlanta office. Heat stroke is possible if conditions push higher.

The timing is particularly relevant for student athletes. The Corky Kell Classic brings North Fulton high school football to Thursday's peak heat: Cambridge faces Brookwood at 5 p.m. and Roswell plays Walton at 8 p.m. Preseason football practices across the area will also be running during the hottest hours.

The North Atlanta Star flagged outdoor practices, construction work and after-school activities as needing extra water and shaded breaks, especially Thursday afternoon.

Scattered afternoon storms remain in the forecast but will not cool every neighborhood, meaning the heat risk persists even on days with rain chances.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook is active for the zone bordering Johns Creek to the north. The NWS recommends limiting outdoor exertion during peak afternoon hours, drinking water before feeling thirsty and moving to air conditioning at the first sign of dizziness, nausea or rapid heartbeat.
