Fulton County Schools opened the 2026-27 school year with a 99% teacher fill rate districtwide, according to the district's Aug. 12 Board Bulletin. That means nearly every classroom across the system has a fully credentialed teacher on day one, including at Johns Creek High School, Chattahoochee High School and Northview High School.

The district's teacher retention rate hit 90% for 2026-27, up from 89% in 2025-26 and 82% in 2023. Three consecutive years of improvement. The district hired more than 500 new employees this cycle, including new principals and assistant principals.

"Their efforts embody the teamwork, integrity, and accountability principles that define our organization and support our Board's vision for student success," Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney said at the Tuesday, Aug. 11 Board Work Session, where Chief Academic Officer Brannon Gaskins, Chief Human Resources Officer Gonzalo La Cava, Chief Operations Officer Noel Maloof and Chief Strategy & Technology Officer Joe Phillips presented the back-to-school update.

Enrollment dips, but Johns Creek holds steady

District enrollment stands at more than 83,000 students, down from 85,475 reported in March and continuing a decline from a 2016-17 peak. But Johns Creek-area schools are bucking that trend, according to The Johns Creek Magazine, with new housing and strong school reputations continuing to attract families.

Chief Communications Officer Brian Noyes told the magazine on Aug. 10 that Northview was chosen for the district's new Find Your Future at Fulton program partly because of its location near the Gwinnett and Forsyth county lines. "We wanted to see what the market would look like if we had a school with the reputation of a Northview — one of our best-performing schools academically — next door to Gwinnett County," Noyes said.

The program allows out-of-district families to enroll for about $11,000 per year.

Two new district leaders with Johns Creek ties

The board approved two district-level hires at the Aug. 11 work session. Dr. Rochelle Hinds takes over as Director of Leadership Development. Dr. Jeff Harrell becomes Director of Research, Evaluation and Accountability.

Harrell has direct Johns Creek roots. He joined Fulton County Schools in 2019 and served as the Specially Designed Instruction Coach at Johns Creek High School before becoming an assistant principal at Cambridge High School and then the English Language Arts Program Specialist supporting high schools in Zones 4-7, which includes Johns Creek-area campuses. He holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina and serves as an Air Intelligence Officer in the Georgia Air National Guard.

What's next: millage rate vote Aug. 20

Looney plans to recommend a tentative millage rate of 18.08 mills at the Thursday, Aug. 20 Board meeting. That would be a 1-mill increase from the current rate and the first recommended increase in seven years. If approved, three public hearings would follow before a final vote.

The district says the increase would eliminate a proposed employee furlough day this school year and give the board flexibility to consider salary increases in future years.
